What is speech- language?

What is speech?

Speech is how sounds are made and using sounds to form words. This also includes stuttering and voice. Sound changes can be seen developmentally in some children, but it becomes a problem if it persists. Children are expected to be 93% intelligible (understood by others) by the time they are four-years-old!

What is expressive language?

Expressive language includes vocabulary (words and their meanings) and grammar (how words are put together to make sentences). Chidlren with expressive language problems may demonstrate difficulty communicating wants and needs, which may lead to behavior issues.

What is receptive language?

Receptive language, or language comprehension, is how children understand spoken language and basic concepts (e.g., big/small, more/less).

What is phonological awareness?

Phonological awareness is the precursor to reading and writing. It's the understanding that words are made up of sounds and those sounds can be manipulated (e.g., rhyming, segmenting, decoding).

It's important to remember that speech and language disorders can exist together or by themselves!
